Enhance Pointer Precision is a feature that is turned on by default on all Windows computers and, for non-experts, a form of mouse acceleration. The usefulness of this function may vary depending on your computer usage and the programs you use.

When using the mouse, only the DPI of your mouse and the distance the mouse travels will affect the movement of the cursor. Enhance Pointer Precision is not just about DPI and the amount of mouse movement, it’s also about how fast the mouse moves. In its basic configuration, this is the acceleration of the mouse.

It may seem like it doesn’t matter, but it can make a difference, especially if it’s enables during gameplay, as mouse controls may be inaccurate with pointer accuracy enabled.

WHAT WORK DOES ENHANCE POINTER PRECISION SEE TO?

Example, without the “Enhance Pointer Precision” option, you can move the mouse one inch and the cursor will move the same distance regardless of how fast that thumb is moving. Now imagine that the “Improve pointer precision” option is in activate. Depending on how fast or slow the mouse is, it all depends on where the cursor stops, regardless of how fast the mouse moves. If you move the same thumb more slowly, the distance the cursor travels is much less than if the mouse moves the same distance much faster.

WHY IS THIS FEATURE ENABLED BY DEFAULT?

Windows automatically maintains this feature until you decide to disable it. There’s a good reason for this, not great for gaming, but for the general desktop user.

Most computer users don’t use their PC for gaming, they will use it for standard web browsing and office work. The same goes for the mouse they own. They won’t have expensive gaming mice with on-the-fly DPI controls, they’ll have cheap mice with fixed, often low DPI.

Improved pointer precision gives the standard user greater precision in slow movements and reduces the scrolling time required for a standard mouse cursor to move across the screen. As a side note, it’s also particularly useful on laptop touchpads where you can move your finger faster or slower.

IS ENHANCE POINTER PRECISION GOOD?

The feature is beneficial to you or not depends entirely on what you choose to use your computer and what hardware you use with it.  As Enhance Pointer Precision doesn’t increase linearly in all areas, it’s difficult to be accurate, especially for gamers, as even the slightest movement of mouse speed can increase the speed of the cursor exponentially. It could be the change between winning and losing, especially in FPS games.

When it’s off, it’s better for a gamer as it builds muscle memory and knows exactly where the cursor will land when you move the mouse a certain distance at a set DPI. You cannot create this muscle memory using the Enhance Pointer Precision option. It is almost impossible to predict and manage the consistency of the speed at which you move the mouse to the degree that you need to be able to play.

ENHANCE POINTER PRECISION GAMING

In general, it seems that gamers with reasonably decent mice prefer to turn off Enhance Pointer Precision because they have gained the muscle memory needed for gaming. While general computer users are for home and office rather than gaming, keep it on, in part. They don’t realize it’s on and that’s all they’re for. Regulars, in part because they don’t feel the need for extreme precision and precision like gamers do.

HOW TO DISABLE MOUSE ACCELERATION BY IMPROVING POINTER ACCURACY

Luckily, It disabling and enabling, and thus speeding up the mouse, is a straightforward process that can be done in a few simple steps as shown below.

Go to – Control Panel> Hardware & Sound> Mouse(under Device and Printers). In Windows 10, you can directly go to Settings> Devices> Mouse> Add mouse options.

Then click the Pointer Options tab and select or deselect the Improve pointer precision option. Click “Apply”, then “OK” to save your variations.
